Black Muslim Refugee flyerJoin us for a talk by Maxamed Abu-Maye, Assistant Professor of African American and African Studies at The Ohio State University, on his new book Black Muslim Refugee: Militarism, Policing, and Somali American Resistance to State Violence (University of California Press, 2025).

This innovative, multi-sited study examines the entanglements of U.S. military violence abroad and domestic policing through the lived experiences of Somali refugees, tracing their journeys from Somalia to the Dadaab Refugee Complexand ultimately to the United States. Attending to the intersecting forces of anti-Blackness and Islamophobia, Abu-Maye foregrounds Somali subjectivities and their critical resistance to systems of surveillance and control.
