Hasan Nisar
Hasan Nisar is a Ph.D. candidate in history of art and early modern studies at Yale. His research focuses on the visual and material cultures of the 17th century Mughal court. While his dissertation focuses on artistic patronage of Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) and his intimate courtiers, the project engages questions of race and ethnicity and how they are constructed at the Mughal court. Discourses on race and particularly its connection to slavery in pre-colonial India differ starkly from the later colonial and trans-Atlantic models and my research brings these differences into sharper focus in an attempt to understand how these concepts were constructed and how they operated, from within the culture.
